Oxgangs Community Gardeners started establishing and improving local greenspaces in 2023, when Edible Estates were looking for community gardeners to start a group.
Since then, we have grown together as a community and have completed several projects already, though our biggest challenge – the establishment of a large community garden on the former bowling green – is still to come.
Here are some of our previous achievements.
A welcoming micro-garden at a busy corner
We transformed the overgrown area outside the Chip Inn, with support from Scotmid, into a welcoming space, and are looking into further improvements such as adding benches.

Seed library
We’ve started a seed library at Oxgangs Library, where visitors to the centre can drop off unwanted seeds and pick up ones they’d like to try out.

Fundraising
We’ve raised funds for our Oxgangs Community Gardeners charity and other organisations through selling plants and crafts.

A garden on Oxgangs Drive
We’ve dug up and planted an area of grass against a block of flats in Oxgangs Drive.
Many of the flats in Oxgangs have lawns, but no access to gardens for the local residents. Spaces like this one provide an opportunity for residents to try their hands at gardening and change the look and feel of their local area.
